Using the crockpot to cook chicken and dumplings is one of the best ways to make this comfort food.
The crockpot is a great way to make chicken and dumplings. It’s easy, it’s convenient, and you don’t have to watch it because the slow cooker does all of the work for you. If you’re looking for a recipe that will let you relax while preparing dinner for your family or friends, this is it!
Get your ingredients ready.
Before you get started, make sure you have all the ingredients and tools needed. You’ll want to gather:
- 2 pounds of chicken breasts or thighs (boneless, skinless)
- 1 large onion (chopped)
- 2 cloves garlic (minced)
- 5 cups chicken broth
Put the chicken in the bottom of the crockpot.
Put the chicken in the bottom of the crockpot. Make sure to remove any skin and bones, as well as any fat that may be on it. The chicken should be covered with broth, but not submerged in liquid–you want it to cook slowly in its own juices and flavors, not steam from being completely submerged in water or broth. If you’re using frozen vegetables like carrots or celery (or even potatoes), add them now too!
Add a little seasoning and pour over broth.

- Cover, cook on low for 8 hours or until chicken is cooked through, then add dumplings (see below).
Cook on high for 6 hours or low for 8 hours, until the chicken falls apart easily into shreds.
Now, it’s time to cook the chicken. You’ll want to set your Crockpot to high for 6 hours (or low for 8 hours) and let it do its thing. The chicken should eventually fall apart easily into shreds when you stir it around with a fork or wooden spoon.
If you’re worried about burning or undercooking your meat, feel free to extend the cooking time accordingly–you can always add more liquid if needed!
Add veggies, if desired, and cook for another hour.
If you want to add veggies, like carrots and celery, now is the time to do it. They’ll cook for another hour or two with the chicken dumplings and make everything taste even better!
Remove about 2 cups of liquid from the crockpot with a ladle or measuring cup.

Add the dry ingredients to the wet and stir until smooth, making sure there are no lumps.
Pour in milk slowly as you whisk it all together until you have a smooth mixture (no lumps). It should resemble thick pancake batter when it’s done! Take care not to add too much milk or else it will be too thin and runny when cooked!

Once this is done, pour your chicken mixture into the slow cooker. Cover with foil then cook on low for 4 hours or until chicken is tender enough to shred easily with two forks
